Minor Champions 2015
Congratulations to the Minor team and management on a fantastic victory over Clane to win the Minor Championship on Sunday!
Thanks to Patrick Ward from Kildare Now for the match report:
A superb defensive showing was the catalyst for a Moorefield victory that will be remembered for many years to come by those associated with the club as they held their nerve to outgun their much fancied opponents by a single point in St Conleth’s Park on Sunday afternoon.
They looked positively shook with just 18 minutes played in the first half, as Clane raced into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead, but they dug in and outscored their opponents by 2-3 to no score over the next 15 minutes of the game. That proved to be the sticking point, and they battened down the hatches as Clane came in search of a goal, but they barely put a foot wrong in defence and ultimately held out.
Like so often this year, Moorefield had Mark Murray to thank for keeping them in this game at times and his seven point personal haul was a huge factor in the winning of this game.
It was pretty apt then that it was the corner-forward who would start the day’s scoring with a simple free in the third minute of the game. Ciaran Kelly was just as confident down the other end for Clane as he shot their first three scores from frees, before nudging over a fourth from play after a fantastic crossfield pass from Ethan O’Donoghue.
A point from the lively Kyle Davey was followed by a superb long range score from the enterprising Ethan O’Donoghue and Clane were looking good with a five point lead at this stage.
Murray kept the Newbridge club in the tie though, and he fired over two quick frees to narrow the gap before Ian Meehan drove over an inspirational score that seemed to give his side a lift. Looking slightly more spurred on, Moorefield soon found the net in inauspicious circumstances. Meehan’s long range shot came off the post, and after the Clane defence fluffed their lines in attempting to clear, the ball broke to Jordan Mc Grath who slotted the ball in from close range.
Murray added another free on the stroke of half-time to give Moorefield a 1-5 to 0-6 advantage at the break.
The second half began with a bang, as Moorefield exerted their dominance and Ian Meehan fired them into a five point lead that they would never relinquish. The marauding wing-forward gathered the ball 50 yards from goal and wriggled his way through numerous Clane defenders before powering the ball into the bottom corner.
Clane could only respond through a Kelly free, but that was quickly cancelled out by a fine point from Mark Mc Dermott. Brian Mc Laughlin, who was well marked throughout by Aaron Masterson, fired over a sumptuous score at the other end for Clane, but again Murray was on hand to point another free and keep Clane at arms length.
Two frees from Kelly either side of a lovely point from Robert Hyland brought Clane to within two points with 15 minutes still to play. They started to panic from this juncture however, and for some reason began going for goals rather than taking their points. Kelly missed a good chance at goal when he shot wide under pressure, while Murray kept the scoreboard ticking down the other end with a brace of frees.
They would be the last scores that Moorefield would manage to get, but that’s all they needed. Caolan Smyth struck a late goal for Clane, but it was in vein as it came in the last play of the game. When Adam Bingham punted out the resulting kickout referee Fergal Barry blew the full-time whistle and Moorefield were able to bask in the success of another county title win for the club.
