Moorefield Jersey Donation

Moorefield GAA and Óglaigh na hÉireann / Irish Defence Forces have a long and proud history with a substantial number of our members also being serving members of the Irish Defence Forces.

A clear example of this link was our recent donation in conjunction with Offaly Senior Footballer, Niall McNamee of Twelves of a batch of children’s tops. These tops were transported to Lebanon by 117 Inf Bn and handed over to Fr Stuarts school.

As part of its mission in Lebanon, the Irish Defence Forces deploy personnel in the CIMIC (Civil Military Relations) role, just one of their many roles is to engage in outreach with groups in need.

One such group was Fr William Stuart’s “Amjad School” in the nearby city of Tyre. Fr Stuart runs a school for approx 160 Syrian Children who’s families have fled the civil war and are now residing in Lebanon.

The children who attend the school, often only own a single set of clothes in which they must work, study and play in, which in turn presents challenges that any parent will be aware of!

Fr Stuart reports that his students were stunned and delighted with their new PE kits and immediately wanted a PE class to try them out and show off their football skills!

Fr Stuart’s Amjad School is reliant upon donations. Rotary Ireland & members of the Defence Forces have donated quantities of education materials and PPE. However PPE is always in short supply and with 160 students on a daily basis supplies quickly run out; hence the lack of masks in the images.
