Moorefield 1-04 Newtown Geals 0-05
Sunday, 25th February
After a first round win against Celbridge and last week’s game vs Kilcock being postponed due to the weather, Moorefield came into the game looking to push on and go for our second win of this league campaign. Newtown Gaels started strong and got a point straight off the throw in when the quick ball was given into to the very rapid and impressive full forward who got the first score of the game. Newtown Gaels then went on to kick 2 more impressive scores while Moorefield were still trying to find our feet. After 8 minutes on the clock, the score was 3 points to no score. Moorefield then got going after 10 minutes when Jack Butler stepped up and kicked a fine score. Moorefield’s high press on the kickout proved to give the Newtown Goalkeeper little options which lead to a brilliant turn over which resulted in the versatile Matthew Sherlock slotting over Moorefields' second score of the game. The game then changed into a very good tactical battle which saw both teams trying to break down 2 very organised defence’s. Moorefield hit the post and crossbar on multiple occasions during this passage of play. After a good turn over at the back Moorefield broke quickly and the ball ended up in the hands of Tommy Rooney whose shot went short but broke into the grateful hands of Nathan Hanniffy Doyle who made no mistake in hitting the back of the net. Just before half time Newtown broke and got their 4th score of the game.
Half time score 1-2 to 0-4.
The second half started off the same as it ended, with only 3 scores shared between the 2 teams in the second half it reflecting how good both defences were performing. Moorefield goalkeeper Ronan Collins deep runs into the Newtown defence caused them problems all day. This led to him being fouled and the ever present Jack Butler slotted over the resulting free kick. Both defences kept on top and it was in the later stages of the game when Newtown finally got off the mark in the second half to bring it back to a 1 point game. With the game coming to the closing stages it was the Moorefield Goalkeeper again who broke the line which resulted in a free for Moorefield which Jack Butler slotted over to make it finish 1-04 to 0-05.
