Meet the Captain – John Finnegan

What does it mean to you to captain your team?
It’s a great honour to captain the team. It means a lot to me, and I hope I can help guide the younger lads coming through.

How did you first get involved in hurling?
I started hurling at the age of eight in 1980. Hurling has always been in my family, so it was inevitable really.

Who was your biggest sporting influence growing up?
The great Galway half-back line of Pete Finnerty, Tony Keady and Gerry McInerney. They were hard as nails.

What is your earliest memory of playing for the club?

My earliest memories with my original club, Commercials, are of playing with my mates every single day. We were always practising.

What has been your proudest moment in a team jersey?
I’ve been hurling for 45 years now, so I’ve been fortunate to have many proud moments. Winning club championships, the National League with Dublin, the Ryan Cup with my college, and representing Ireland against Scotland in the 1992 Hurling/Shinty International all stand out. But hopefully my proudest moment is still to come—winning with Moorefield. It will happen.

Who is the biggest character in the dressing room?
It has to be Shelley. A great character.

Who is the most competitive player at training?
Davy Carroll. It's always goals, goals, goals with him!

Who would you trust to take the winning free in a final?
The last man I mentioned—Davy.

What is your favourite pre-match meal or routine?
Any food will do! I always make sure I prepare mentally and get my head right before a game.

Which hurler, past or present, would you most like to have on your team?
Niall Moran.

What advice would you give to young players coming through the club?
Work hard, be honest, and always make time to practise. Your hurley should become an extension of your arm.

John leads the team into today's decider. We wish him, the team, and the management every success.

Come support the team and management.
